Changing Gendered Behaviours and Consumerism in the Interwar Period
The inter-war period were years of rapid social changes in the Western world. Many of these changes were promoted, underlined and encouraged by mass marketing and advertising. Changing gendered roles were highlighted in this period. This collection will examine these transformations within the prism of consumer culture.
This book has its origins in a very successful panel held at the American Historical Association Pacific Branch in June 2007. We currently have papers on the following topics:
- Feminine modernity in advertising in Britain and North America
- Gendered drinking patterns in Ontario
- Female athleticism in the United States
- African-American beauty entrepreneurship
We invite submissions on any subject related to gender, consumption and modernity from the 1920s-40s in any country or region.
Please submit abstracts by email attachment by May 1st, 2008. Completed manuscripts will be expected by October 1st, 2008.
